SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD Drives
There's a great new option for video editing on the go -- the SanDisk Extreme line of deliciously-fast portable disk drives.
These combine the memory-access transfer rates of solid-state drive (SSD) storage with the SuperSpeed USB 3.x interface.
SDD storage uses memory chips instead of mechanical parts, so it can be much more rugged and provide much faster access time than external hard disk drives -- but it is still significantly more expensive, and therefore is typically available with smaller capacities.
But now SanDisk has introduced two new SSD external drives that offer even more tempting boosts in speed:
- The SanDisk Extreme 500 Portable SSD drive is around half the size of a smartphone, and runs around four times faster than an external hard drive. It's available in capacities of 120, 240 and 480 GB, list priced at $99, $149 and $239.
- The SanDisk Extreme 900 Portable SSD drive offers up two terabytes of storage in a more traditional external drive shape. And with the new USB 3.1 interface (twice as fast as USB 3.0), it's nine times faster than a portable hard drive. It's available with 480 and 960 GB, and 1.92 TB, at $399, $599 and $999.
